Lawmakers have before them a difficult yet plain task: revise Vermont’s 1860s-era school voucher system in a way that respects Vermont’s values and is consistent with the US Supreme Court’s ruling in Carson.

The legislature has begun to grapple with how best to reset eligibility of taxpayer funding for K-12 education. As it does so, it must:

  • Respect the separation of church and state

  • Prevent public money from going to institutions that discriminate

  • Respect the tradition of community choice in towns without their own schools

  • Recognize the role the four historic academies have played in our public school system
