Carson v. Makin has put Vermont at a crossroads when it comes to eligibility of taxpayer funding for K-12 education. Here’s why.

The US Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled in Makin that if a state provides taxpayer vouchers for any private schools it must provide them to all private schools, including religious ones. Combined with an earlier decision in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue, the court’s majority gives Vermont a choice: fund all private schools with taxpayer vouchers or restrict taxpayer funding to public schools.
